Formations guide

The 4-1-4-1 formation explained: compact block and lone striker

A back four, a single pivot, a line of four attacking midfielders and a lone striker. Compact without the ball, flexible in attack.

The basic shape

The 4-1-4-1 lines up with a back four, a defensive midfielder (the 1), a flat four of midfielders ahead of him and one striker. Against the ball it becomes a very compact block with two lines of four in front of the keeper. With the ball it often morphs into something close to a 4-3-3 as the wide midfielders push up alongside the striker.

The 4-1-4-1 is often described as a defensive cousin of the 4-3-3: the numbers are the same, but the starting shape keeps three players in the defensive line of four midfielders instead of pushing them forward as wingers. The ball-side wide midfielder can jump to press and create a temporary 4-3-3, then retreat when the ball moves on.

The single pivot is the anchor of the shape. They screen the back four, cover the half-spaces and protect the centre. If you have a naturally defensive midfielder who can also receive under pressure, the 4-1-4-1 gives that player a defined, high-value role.

Roles by position

Centre-backs
Two central defenders with the usual mix of aerial dominance and short-passing quality. With a single pivot they need to be comfortable building play directly with the full-backs.
Full-backs
Balanced: support the wide midfielders in attack without leaving the back four exposed. Often the wide midfielder ahead of them dictates whether they overlap or sit.
Single pivot (1)
The defensive midfielder who screens the back four. Reads second balls, intercepts passes into the strikers and starts moves from a central position.
Central eights
Two central midfielders ahead of the 1. They help press the opposition midfield and arrive in the box to support the striker. Must be fit, positional and comfortable with quick one-twos.
Wide midfielders
Start as wide midfielders, not classic wingers. In attack they can step up alongside the striker as near-wingers. In defence they retreat to the second line of four.
Central striker
Leads the press against the opposition centre-backs. Works as a reference on the counter and combines with the arriving eights.

Strengths

  • Two lines of four in defence, a compact block very hard to play through centrally.
  • Clear single pivot gives the team a reference point for defensive organization.
  • Easily transforms into a 4-3-3 with the ball by pushing the wide midfielders higher.
  • Good shape for teams that want to counter-press and break quickly.

Weaknesses

  • Against a double pivot shape, the single 1 can be overloaded in central midfield.
  • If the wide midfielders do not track back, the full-backs are exposed.
  • Lone striker can be isolated if the midfield does not arrive on time.

When it works best

The 4-1-4-1 is a strong pick for teams that want a defensive block with one natural route to attack through counter-pressing. It works best when the single pivot is a top-tier defensive midfielder and the two eights are mobile runners. It is also an excellent option against a front three that relies heavily on inside runs from inverted wingers.

Build it in MyLineups
