Formations guide

The 3-5-2 formation explained: wing-backs and a midfield five

Three centre-backs, two wing-backs, a midfield three and two strikers. A shape built around width from the wing-backs and a numerical edge in midfield.

The basic shape

The 3-5-2 fields three central defenders, two wing-backs who provide all the natural width, three central midfielders and a two-striker partnership. Depending on the ball and the opponent, the team turns into a 5-3-2 in defence (the wing-backs drop in) and a 3-3-4 or 3-5-2 in attack (the wing-backs push high up the pitch).

The elastic nature of the 3-5-2 is the whole idea. When the team loses the ball, the wing-backs tuck back to make a back five and the midfield three becomes a compact block. When the team wins the ball, the wing-backs explode forward and the formation looks more like a 3-3-4 with a front two plus two wing-backs.

Compared to a back four, the back three often has one centre-back who steps into midfield or carries the ball, giving the shape a natural way to beat a high press and progress the ball through the middle.

Roles by position

Central centre-back
The deepest of the three. Organizes the line, covers behind the ball-side centre-back when they step out, and typically distributes the long pass to switch play.
Wide centre-backs
Left and right of the central defender. Step into midfield to press or carry the ball forward, and defend the half-space when the wing-back is caught high up the pitch.
Wing-backs
The engines of the shape. Provide all the width going forward and all the width going backward. Require high stamina and real delivery from wide areas. Without them, the 3-5-2 collapses to a narrow block.
Defensive midfielder (6)
Screens the back three and covers the space left by the wide centre-backs when they step up. In possession, receives between the lines from the centre-back and sets the tempo.
Eights
Two central midfielders ahead of the 6. One tends to support the strikers and arrive late in the box, the other links midfield and defence and covers the channels.
Strike partnership
A pair up front. Usually one drops into the pocket between the lines to link with the eights, while the other holds the last line and attacks the box.

Strengths

  • Two wing-backs give persistent width on both sides without inverted wingers.
  • Extra centre-back provides cover against direct wingers and strikers.
  • Three in midfield plus two pressing strikers overloads a flat midfield four.
  • The shape naturally becomes a back five in defence, hard to play through centrally.

Weaknesses

  • Wing-backs take huge distances; a tired wing-back leaves the team exposed.
  • Against a front three, the wide centre-backs can be pulled into no-mans-land.
  • The team can get narrow in attack if the wing-backs do not arrive on time.

When it works best

The 3-5-2 is a strong choice when you want two strikers but also want to dominate the middle of the pitch. It suits teams that have a clear pair up front and two elite athletic wing-backs. It is also a popular option against possession teams, since the back three and midfield three can form a very compact 5-3-2 block that is hard to break down.

Build it in MyLineups

  1. Open the MyLineups web builder.
  2. Pick any of the real clubs or national teams that match your 3-5-2 vision and load its squad.
  3. Tap the formation picker and select 3-5-2.
  4. Place your three central defenders, then put the wing-backs clearly higher than a full-back would sit. Keep the defensive midfielder in front of the back three and staggered behind the two eights.
  5. Stack your two strikers close enough that one can drop and the other runs in behind. Export the image or share a link that reopens the exact same XI.
